I remember

why I like tumblr…. so I’m back. Been a whirlwind trying to plan a trip for a bunch of my students to Turkey. Blazing trails ain’t easy, but I’m glad it’s getting done. I wish more students, especially minority students, could take advantage of study abroad - it really widens perspective. With that said, planning the course and renewing refreshing my knowledge of the Ottoman Empire has a been a task and a love in itself.

Black and Third World people are expected to educate white people as to our humanity. Women are expected to educate men. Lesbians and gay men are expected to educate the heterosexual world… There is a constant drain of energy which might be better used in redefining ourselves and devising realistic scenarios for altering the present and constructing the future.

Pieces Of Mee: KONY 2012: Causing more harm than good.

pomee:

Dear Jason Russell,

After being bombarded with your KONY 2012 crusade, I have no choice but to respond to your highly inaccurate, offensive, and harmful propaganda. I realized I had to respond in hopes of stopping you before you cause more violence and deaths to the Acholi people (Northern…

This man comes into my job almost every day with a free frosty coupon. He’s homeless, and he’s also of the nicest homeless people that come here. He just made me want to hug him when I saw him mixing ice in what was left of his frosty, just to have a bit more. Smh, I’m giving him another free one. This is saddening me, seriously. I went up to him and offered him one, he smiled and said “naahh” I said you sure? Is there anything I can help you with? He laughed and shook his head in a polite way. One of the most humble people to come through here… Every other one is usually rude, and angry. But this man still keeps his joy. This tells me I should never have a reason to frown, if he can still manage to smile.

Hadewijch

just saw the film on Sundance - kinda reminded me of myself at 19 — just really in love with LOVE for the Creator, a little crazy - teetering between isolation and being with the world. Interesting film, but the suicide bomber angle - hmm.. started out as believable, but left a little wanting later on.

ramadan 6 - neuroscience musings 3

a bit of success… Finally was able to get a neuroscience professor to comment on the proposal. She thinks doing a behavioral study first is a good idea and narrowing it down a bit… so I’m on my way - persistence isn’t a bad thing, folks.
